How to Plant

If possible, loosen or till up the entire area to be planted. Amend the soil, if necessary, with compost-type material–decayed leaves, peat moss, or dried manure. Many soils need little work beyond just being dug and loosened to a depth of a few inches before planting. (Local gardeners can best advise you of any improvement that soils in your area require.)

Please be prepared to plant as soon as your groundcover arrives.

Stagger rows for a dense bed. We recommend spacing them 6 - 12 inches apart. 200 plants will fill an area 5' x 10' nicely ... twice that area if you don't mind waiting for them. If planting under trees, dig carefully to avoid damaging tree roots. Creating 'Planting-pockets' between major roots is a good solution.

Open holes in soil just deep enough to take a single plant (roots only). Cover and firm the soil around its crown. Always plant each individual plant to cover all its roots. Water immediately.

As with any new plants, regular waterings are important to get them established. Subsequent watering can be the same as for a lawn.

Do not fertilize until plants are established, then give light monthly feedings through the growing season.

Mulch is beneficial to keep roots moist and discourage weeds.

While considered shade-loving, vinca also does very well in full sun in all but desert climates.
